What are the different types of cello endpins?

Endpin is an adjustable rod at the end of a cello or an upright bass that holds the instrument upright when it is played. Cello endpines vary according to their material, width and length. They can also be straight or bent.

For violoncello endpines, different materials can be used. The earliest endpins were made of wood, but at the beginning of the 20th century, wooden possibilities began to replace resistant metal options. When it comes to the 21st century, Tempered Steel remained the most popular choice for violoncella endpines. However, some cellists prefer laminates or carbon fiber endpins that are lighter weight and absorb less vibration tools. Regardless of the endpin material, it is usually limited by a rubber stopper that prevents its sharp end from damage to the floor.

cello endpines generally come in two widths: 0.32 inches (8 mm) or 0.39 inches (10 mm). Some cello experts recommend a width of 8 mm because it is lighter but others think 10 mm pin is robustmore and safer. Both width fits in standard fittings. However, fittings must be a suitable width to open a particular tool: 0.93 inches (23.5 mm), 1 inch (25.5 mm) or 1.1 inches (27.5 mm).

Styles for the length of the violoncellla endpines have varied over the years. The initial endpins were only a few inches long, while the current versions can usually be extended up to 20 inches (45 cm) below the bottom of the tool. Longer endpin results in a musician holding an instrument at a less upright angle that some people find the result of a more natural position.

To make the tool angle even closer to the horizontal, some players prefer bent endpine. This is one of the newer developments in the field of cello and has not gained extended popularity since the beginning of the 21st century. While some players feel that the largest control over the quality of their tone with the bent endpine, others still prefer uprightthe tool location. Some cellists also think that bent endpine does not support the weight of cello or direct endpin, which can result in damage to the tool.
