What is Bayberry?

Bayberry, also known as wax myrt or candlestick, is a shrub or small tree that can grow up to 40 feet (12 meters) high. The plant is originally from Sandy Swamps, Bogs and Wet Forest Regions in Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and South America. It is still deciduous green, with some species losing leaves in winter and other species remain green throughout the year. However, most Bayberry species are evergreen. They are wider at the tip and put off a pleasant scent when they are bruised or crushed. The leaves are a glossy dark green color and are detained until late autumn before the fall.

Bayberry flowers are small, white to green colors and appear at the beginning until the middle of spring before the new leaves grew. Male and female flowers are carried on various plants. Male flowers usually appear in cylindrical clusters and female flowers in shorter, round clusters.

Bayberry is known for its fruit -like wax that is used for its ornamental value, especially in the winter mooníchi. The fruit remains on the tree for a long time, maturing in September and remains as long as the following spring. Each fruit has a diameter of about 1/8 inches (1 centimeter) and is difficult to touch.

The Bayberry Fruit wax coating also produces a pleasant smell, which is often used to make candles, Potourris and soap fragrances. The wax is removed by fine cooking the berries in the water and then allowing the water to cool. The wax solidifies as a film on top of the water, where it can be removed and directly added to candles and soaps.

Although traditionally used to produce candles, there are many other uses of Bayberry. The leaves can be used as a natural insectpeient and are often grown as ornamental plants in personal gardens and landscaping. As a landscaping, Bayberry is best suited for use along the borders, such as planting a foundation or planting near buildings and structures and as a coverage of erosion.

Bayberries are the preferred source of food forSeveral species of birds, including gray cats, swallows, red data, yellow -brown breeders and eastern Meadowlarks. They also attract various songs that produce their nests in foliage. This is beneficial for the spread of Bayberry, because the seeds spread through birds' droppings. In addition, Bayberry leaves also serve as a meal for several different moths, including brown tail, emperor and winter moth.
