What is gyrfalcon?

Gyrfalcon is the prey of a bird who primarily lives in the Arctic areas of Europe, North America and Asia. Women are about 35 percent larger than men and are the largest of the Falcon species, weighing up to £ 4.5 (£ 2.0), having a length of 20 to 25 inches (50 to 63 cm) and showing a range of up to 4.3 feet (1.3 meters). The color of birds may vary from almost pure white to dark gray with white stripes and populations in different areas will generally tend to specific color changes. Gyrfalcon is highly evaluated in Sokol's sport, and in the Middle Ages people considered them difficult to acquire them, which in general meant that the kings and other nobles were the only ones who could use them. In the northwest territories in Canada, Gyrfalcon was recognized as an official bird and was also shown in the original coat of arms in the Icelandic Republic. Generally they prefer open areas with cliffs near rivers or along the coast. During harder parts of winter, when the weather makes it difficult to find prey, they can sometimes migratesouth and look for more abundant food sources.

Gyrfalcons have a variety of diet, including everything from Ptarmigan to small birds, waterfowl and rabbits. When looking for prey, birds will usually either twist ground scan for movement or look while sitting from a comfortable point of view. In general, they attack the fact that they fly low to the ground and chase their prey, eventually overtake them and dive for killing. Sometimes when hunting other birds is gyrfalcon can catch in flight. Partly due to their size, it is assumed that gyrfalcons do not have a real natural predator except the Golden Eagle.

Between two and three years of age, GyrfalCons become sexually mature and start mating. Animals are unable to build their own nests and generally use natural depression along the cliffs or use abandoned nests from other birds. GyrfalCons usually lie between three and five eggs that incubate approximately 35 days. Males and women form a paired bond and both incubate eggs, while women do more work than men. Young birds are usually able to fly and become independent after about 50 days.
