What is Holly Fern?

Holly Fern can apply to one of the two varieties of ferns. Cyrtomium Falcatum or Japanese Holly Fern, comes from parts of East Asia. polystichum lonchitis , commonly referred to as Northern Holly Fern, is more distributed and can be grown in most northern hemisphere, including North America and Greenland. Both ferns got the nickname Holly Fern because their leaflets carry a strong resemblance to Holly leaves. Each leaf can be up to 7 inches (17.8 centimeters) and made up of 4 to 10 pairs of large pinnate leaflets. These leaflets are usually quite leather, glossy and dark green in color, with serrated, jagged edges that are joined at a sharp point.ive to Japan. In other parts of the world, this is a popular choice for houseplants. At some point they fled into nature and can now be found in the damp, shady areas of wilderness in many parts of Europe and North America.

Northern Holly ferns are roughly the same height as the Japanese variety. However, the leaves of the northern variety are narrower and measure about 2.5 inches (6 centimeters) wide. The base of each leaf is narrow, somewhere above the center it increases and ends with the tip.

North Holly Ferms are also dark shiny green with serrated edges and pointed toe. However, they are much smaller in size, and therefore there are more on each sheet. Each leaf consists of about 25 to 35 pairs of pinnate leaflets, which rarely have a larger 1.5 inches (4 centimeters) long.

Both varieties of Holly Fern have disputes with the bottom side of each leaf that allows plants to be reproduced. When these disputes are usually light green. As the spores ripen, they are much darker and can even look black.

Japanese and northern Holly ferns need to survive humid environments. If they are grown inside as houseplants, the soil must not be allowed to dry during watering. Inside they will prosper at full withLunks, but if they are planted outside, they prefer shady or partial shady areas.
