What is Limia?
Many types of fish that people use to keep as pets belong to the genus Limia. Small freshwater fish belonging to the family Poecilidae, Limia include Mollies, Platys, Swordtails and Guppies. There are more than twenty varieties of these fish, mostly living on the Greater Antilles Islands in the Caribbean.
These small fish differ greatly according to each individual species. Some have wide, hard bodies, while others are long and thin. The body shades differ from solid yellow and rainbow blue to black and red. Many species are very shiny, with shimmering rainbow color and complicated patterns on their fins or tail. Some also have stripes or stains that are often black.
Depending on a particular species, male limia can grow up to 1.75 inches (4 centimeters) in length, while women can be larger and measures up to 3 inches (6.5 centimeters). Unlike many other fish types, women of this family give birth to live young. Frys usually bring twenty fish.
male limia fish areUsually more colorful than their female counterparts. Their coloring exists to help them attract women to join. With mating, it often occurs in some species that the new Frys can be born as fast as every six to eight weeks.
, however, most species in this family do not use courtship rituals. As a result, many men are returning to rapid, creeping copulation and many mating occur without the consent of female fish. Scientists say, as a result, Limia Frys does not have to bring the strongest possible species that could result from a typical sexual selection.
Although some hybrid fish have been developed, this effort was largely unsuccessful. Their swimming patterns were also jerky and uneven. Since they could not reproduce, two hybrid frys lasted only one generation.
While limia is freshwater fish, they often live in semi-saltwater or brackish water. For this reason, many people who keep fish like pets want to add some salt to their aquariums. Veterinarians and pet staff can help make a suitable selection of salt accessories.
When maintaining limits as domestic animals, it is important to maintain the right aquarium for them to be successful. A good temperature range is between 72 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit (22 to 26 degrees Celsius). Fish flakes will maintain most of these fish species well, although other delicacies such as live or frozen shrimp may also be provided for diversity. There may also be a plant matter such as eyelashes to help keep fish health.
