What is Royal Poinciana?

Royal poinciana, scientifically known as denyix regia , is a type of tropical plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is also commonly known as a flame tree or a charming tree because of its charming depiction of flowers with exceptionally vivid colors reminiscent of flames. The plant is also referred to as Gulmohar in Pakistan and India. This permanent plant is widely grown in Hong Kong, the Canary Islands and the Caribbean. Royal Pinciana is originally from Madagascar, although it is widely grown in other tropical countries.

This tree thrives in a well -drained, acidic and wet soil under full sun. Royal Pinciana can grow to a height of 40 feet (about 12 m) and the crown can spread to about 40 to 60 feet (12 to 18 m) to width. It needs protection from strong winds, as its shallow roots can eradicate and cause a tree collapse.

In addition to its ornamental value, this tree of the garden is also used for its dense leaves a modest height that can provide enough withthe mouthery. The royal poinciana leaves are pinnate, which means they are divided as feathers and measures about 1 to 2 feet (0.3 to 0.6 m). Each sheet consists of 20 to 40 pairs of primary leaflets, which are further divided into 10 to 20 pairs of secondary leaflets. These folded leaves are bright green and very light.

The royal Pinciana flowers are large and normally yellow, orange or bright red. Each flower has four decaying petals that measure up to 3 inches (about 8 cm) in length and the fifth petal calls a standard that is upright and slightly larger than other petals. The standard is significant due to its white and yellow spots. Another common name Royal Poinciana is Peacock Flower, because the physical appearance of flowers is similar to the appearance of peacock with feathers up.

Promotion of Royal Pinciana can be achieved by sowing his seeds. Dark brown seed pods of this plant measurement up to 2inches (about 5 cm) wide and about 2 feet (0.6 m) long; Sometimes they are also used as a drum tool called Marac. Individual seeds are small with an average weight of 0.01 ounces (about 0.4 g). Although they are considered legumes, the seeds are not edible and are usually used only for spread purposes. This ornamental tree is sometimes used to improve the properties of the soil due to its ability to fix nitrogen.
