What is a teepee?
Teepee, also known as Tipi, is a dwelling that has been and still uses native Americans. Tipi is the name Sioux, which means "house". Teepee is a conical structure made of poles that are covered with buffalo leather. The rope is used to secure the dwelling at the top. During a period of heavy winds it is attached to the ground with pins.
Although the Indians are known for using teepees, this is not true for all tribes. The trunks such as Iroquois and Algonquin have favored permanent residence settings using structures such as brushes or Wigwams. Only the nomadic tribes that were hunted by Buffalo used teepees. Their dwellings had to be assembled quickly and removed to watch the herd migration. Great Plains Indian Tribes, such as Lipan Apache, Comanche and Kiowa, popularized teepee. Five or fewer people could comfortably fit in the temple of before it was overcrowded. The teepee chief was usually much larger and threw 12 or more people. This is because tribal meetings were usually performed in histo the house.
During the period of relocation, teepee was dismantled and made on Travois. Due to the compact size, two women were able to do this in less than one hour. The Poles were assembled into a frame and covered with buffalo leather. Travois was filled with Indian things and pulled dogs like a sled.
When Spanish were introduced by horses on the plains of the Indians in 1500, the TEPEES could be built a much larger size. With horses can be collected and used much larger poles in the construction of teepee, which is a higher and larger circuit.
teepees was designed to take a small fire in the middle of the dwelling. The hole to the top allowed the escape of smoke, while the smoke valves helped provide oxygen to feed the fire. The structures were directed to the wind to help throw the fire up and out of the chimney. During the period of warm weather, the sides of the teepee were rolled up to allow the breeze to flow.
teepees are rarely painted ifis not at the time of war. During these times they are painted in traditional tribal samples, usually involving animals. However, many teepees have been decorated with objects such as buffalo horns, tails, horse hair or bear claws. Due to the need to move rapidly, the equipment was rare and usually included a bear skin on the ground for sleep purposes.
