What is a wooden shingle?
Wooden shingles are elongated pieces of wood used to make a roof or as a siding for a house. Many old houses have wooden roofs or tiles, because wood was historically often the most affordable building material. Modern roofing materials often last longer and are more durable, but to maintain the authentic look of an old home, wooden shingles are hard to beat.
In order to make a wooden shingle, each piece is cut out of the wood block with a saw and should have the same size, a slope of the tapering end and thickness. Each piece is elongated and usually measures 16 to 24 inches (about 40 to 60 cm) long and 3 to 4 inches (about 7.62 to 10.16 cm) wide. One end has 1.25 to 1.5 inches (about 3.1 to 3.8 cm) and narrows at the other end.
The roofs or siding of the house are usually where the wooden shingles are nailed to the place. The ragged end goes up and holds the nail. When the shingles are connected, each row overlaps the next line and creates a tight surface of the trok bouncing water.
One of the most common materials used is Cedar. The cedar types used include Eastern white cedar, Alašský yellow cedar and western red cedar. This type of wood naturally has oils that slow down the decay caused by rain, mold and insects. As Cedar ages in the elements, the color turns into a silver gray color. The good roof of the cedar should take between 25 and 50 years.
Like a wooden shingle is a wooden cocktail. The shocks are similarly shaped and connected in the same way. However, the shocks are hand -cut, traditionally an ax. The roof of shaking has a rough appearance and is used on structures when a rustic appearance is required. The shake usually has a rough surface, while the wooden shingle is smooth.
Modern roof materials include metal, tar and plastics that hold longer and are more durable than wooden shingles. When deciding on the use of traditional wood roof, the reason is often to maintain DOmov in original condition. Many older houses have these types of roofs.
wooden shingles differ in size and shape. Some older houses have styles that are round at the bottom or narrower or stronger than standard varieties. When restoring the old house, it may be difficult to find wooden shingles that correspond to the existing roof; Consultation with a restoration company can often be useful.
