What is aechmea?

AECHMEA is a flowering bromeliad race in the family bromeliideae . The leaves have a strong, wax texture and grow in a spiral shape from the center of the plant. When the plant reaches maturity, flower and flower stems and flowers come from the center of the leaves. Aechmea is originally from Brazil. General names for aechmea fasciata are a plant of silver vases and urn plants. The leaves form a trough in the shape of a cup in the middle, where the water collects. In tropical rainforests, Aechmea plants grow high in forest canopies, attached to the trunk of trees. The roots are attached to the bark and absorb nutrients and humidity from the air. The cup -shaped center collects water and creates a mini ecosystem in which insects and larvae attract larger predators. Each leaf grows from the center to the heels in the shape of a wobbler. Individual leaves are from 18 inches to 24 inches (about 45 cm to 60 cm). The color of the leaves ranges from the dark blue-green color to the light silver gray. Some varieties have leaves with white marks. Flowers are pink, orangeor salmon color and bloom in spring and summer. Internal plants often live in semi -forming conditions for many years before the flower production.

In subtropical and slight climate, aechmea can be grown as a plant. During the summer, when the weather is above 55 degrees Fahrenheit (about 12 ° C), it will grow well outdoors in a sunny or partially shady place. In winter, the pot should be brought in and placed in a sunny window or on a covered, heated porch.

The roots of bromeliads, including aechmea, are susceptible to rot if the soil environment is difficult or constantly wet. The growing medium composed of the same parts of the peat bog and watering soil creates a well drainage environment. Suitable missics of sand, coconut peels, perlite and vermiculite are also suitable media cultivation.

Plants

aechmea produce "puppies" from the base of the stem below the lowest layer of leaves. Puppies are miniature clones of maternal rosTLINY. Puppies should be removed when they are several centimeters high. They are only freely connected to the parent plant stem and can be gently processed and planted in a new pot.
