What is an orrefors vase?
VASA ORREFORS is a piece of glass produced by the Swedish Glassmaker Orrefors. ORRefors glass vases are most commonly blown by hand and are made of crystal, also known as lead glass, valued for their bright, brilliant appearance and high density, so such vases feel heavier than conventional glass vases. ORRefors has been producing glass since 1898, but the type of artistic folding often associated with ORREFORS vases comes until the beginning of the 20th century, when the manufacturer began hiring artists to work with their glassmakers. The first works from Orrefors were often influenced by the Secevy style and both newer and antique vases can demonstrate the original methods invented from glass. The ORRefors vase is often sought after for its combination of handmade craft and original design.
Several new hiding techniques have been invented in ORRefors and can be seen in society vases. Such techniques include Graal Glass, representing the colored reliefs of the encased in a layer of smooth glass; Ariel, representing decorative air patterns uimprisoned inside the glass; and Krako, representing the geometric patterns of air bubbles in the glass. Old and recent designs ORRefors Vasa can also show techniques and functions such as colored glass, cut glass and engraved glass.
ORRefors often hires designers who are not Glassmakers, but have experience with other arts and belts such as painters, engravers, sculptors and goldsmiths to create collections. The well -known early designer ORRefors is Simon Gate, a painter known for his classic glass patterns; Edward Hald, an artist who studied with French painter Matisse and became known for his modern glass designs; and Edvin Ohrstrom, a sculptor who began working for ORRefors in 1936. Vasa ORRefors with these and other early designers ORRefors are often highly valued by collectors.
ORRefors vases mostly made of lead crystal, better known as lead glass. This type of glass contains leadIn the form of lead oxide, rather than calcium as a normal glass. Due to the high atomic weight of lead compared to calcium, lead glass is heavier than conventional glass and has a higher refractive index, which increases the brilliance and spark of vases made of material. Items made of lead glass also make a distinctive ringing when tapping. Glassmakers can be processed at lower temperatures, which makes it easier to remove all air bubbles from the glass and contribute to the clarity of items such as the orrefors vase.
