What is Bouvardia?

Bouvardia is a genus of plants that consists of about 30 species that come from America and are part of the Rubiaceae family . The plant can be found in the American states of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Other species can also be found in Canada and parts of Europe. This flowering shrub is also known as Bush, Trumpetellia and Hummingbird Flower.

Bouvardia shrub grows from 24 to 36 inches (61 to 91.4 cm) to height and has a 36 -inch (91.4 cm) range. It is considered a deciduous permanent shrub because it loses small, narrow leaves every winter. At the end of summer to the beginning of winter it produces fragrant flowers that can be reddish, red, pink or even white. These tubular flowers are a popular bee, butterflies and birds. It was named after Charles Bouvard, who was a superintendent of the royal gardens in Paris. This plant was practically forgotten from the 18th century to 1990, when the breeder in the Netherlands began to develop a dwarf versions. In 1997 it was made for use as a houseplant.
