What is Bowenia?
Bowenia is the name of the genus for two kinds of evergreen perennials: b. Spectabilis and b. Serrulata . These plants similar to ferns come only from Australia. Both types of bowenia have dark green leaves and conical flowers. They grow best in sandy lowlands and in warm tropical areas.
The name Bowenia was selected in honor of Queensland's first Governor in Australia, Sir George Bowen. Although there are only two species in Bowenia, there are also two other species that have been discovered in the form of fossils. The fragments of the leaves b. Eocenica were discovered during the excavations in the coal mine near Victoria, Australia. The second fossil species, b. Papillosa , was found in the new South Wales in Australia. Both fossil species come from the eocene era, about 40 million years ago.
Depending on the climate, bowenia may be grown inside or outside. If they are grown inside a house or greenhouse, they should be planted in a soil containing the same amountsand, leaf molds and rough bark. They should also have access to bright light, lots of water and lunar fertilizers. If the bowenia is grown outside, the climate must be mild and free of frost. In addition, the plant should be protected from strong winds and heavy rainfall, yet it should receive partial sunlight.
of both living species, b. Serrulata grows best in sandy areas. In fact, the plant is able to push its roots more than 6 feet deep (about 1.8 m) with Australian sand. In addition, it can grow to 7 feet (about 2.1 m) high. Alternatively b. Spectabilis prefers wet soil, such as those located in the northern part of Queensland. It can grow to 5 feet (about 1.5 m) high, but can also grow as wide.
people can be able to distinguish b. Spectabilis of b. Serrulata due to the shape of their leaves. Leaves b.Serrulata are thinner than those of b. Spectablilis . In addition, they have slightly serrated or jagged edges. b. Spectabilis has smoother, round leaves, without jagged edges. Her leaves almost seem shiny or leather.
Because of the leaves of both Bowenia species are attractive, they were regularly collected for use in flower arrangements. In the past, people harvesting leaves could apply for a license for a particular area. Because the plants grow very slowly, they are now protected. As a result, they are not commonly used in flowers arrangements, but silk or plastic versions are quite popular.
