What is Brugmansia?

Brugmansia is a genus of flowering trees or shrubs with seven species, all originally from subtropical South America. Together, the plants are called Angel's Trumpets or Angel's Tears, along with plants of the family datura . Plants brugmansia grow to a height of 10 to 36 feet (3 to 11 meters).

These plants have a large, hanging trumpet flowers that can be individual or double. Flowers have a light, pleasant aroma and can be red, yellow, orange, pink or white. The leaves are covered with fine hair and can be varied in some cultivars. Plants are easy to grow in humid and fertile but well -drained soil in a climate without frost. They prefer full partial sun. Outdoor plants require protection during cold winter, but the roots are durable and usually set off again in the spring. Brugmansia flowers have a very long blockyoming season that lasts from the end of spring to autumn and sometime until the beginning of winter.

Rod is often divided into two groups or sections. The brugmansia section or the heat cultivation group includes b. Aurea , b. Insignis , b. Section sphaerocarpium , also called a cold group, includes b. Arborea , b. Sanguinea and b. Vulcanicola . There are also many hybrids and cultivars in the family. Warming groups of growing groups are less tolerant of cold weather, while plants of the groups for cold growing that grow at higher altitudes in the wild, prefer moderate temperatures and do not have to bloom if it is very hot.

All parts brugmansia are poisonous and can be potentially fatal for humans and animals if they are used. They contain toxins atropina scopolamine. It is very important to oversee children and pets around the plants.

Whether the plantIt consumes or inhaled, can cause hallucinations, enlarged pupils, dry mouth, fever, increased pulse and blood pressure, weakened muscles and paralysis. If the plant comes into contact with the eyes, the uneven pupil size may also occur. In some places, the cultivation, sale and purchase of plants brugmansia is illegal due to the potential danger it represents.

Brugmansia was used in some shamanic traditions for ritual intoxication, especially among the native groups of Peru and Ecuador, where many plants grow in the wild. However, the consumption of the plant is always dangerous because the amount of toxin is unpredictable.
