What is chickweed?
Chickweed actually refers to dozens of different types of plants. Most often, when people refer to chickweed, they refer to one kind, stellaria media . This kind of chickweed, which is originally from Europe, but also grows as weeds across the US, is also called star weeds, grass, satin flower and mouse ear. It has been used as a herbal remedy for centuries under many conditions. Most often, chickweed was used in topical form to treat rash, eczema and insect bites. It contains nitrates that many consider unhealthy. There are few scientific evidence that verifies that Chickweed is beneficial in oral form. Furthermore, there are safer herbal preparations, especially for use as expectorants if necessary. Some people consider the benefits of Chickweed, which mainly relate to the bite of insects, especially. It can help reduce swelling, but should not be replaced by treatment if it is allergic to bite of certain insects, like bees.
Care should be used in the application of Chickweed to bite children, especially if it is likely to insert a bitten area such as parts of hands, they get their mouths. Chickweed in oral form is not recommended for children.
