What is the crown rot?

Usually the crown rot is fatal, although in some cases it can be treated if the gardener is willing to spend some extensive effort. As with many other diseases of plants, prevention is easier than curing.

Several different organisms can cause the crown rot. One of the most famous is the phytophthora , an organism that is often mistakenly referred to as a fungus, although it is actually a protist. These ugly visitors to the garden were responsible for the infamous Irish potato famine and continue to cause confusion on plants around the world.
