What is the first dibs?
There are a number of opportunities where the first person who claims ownership or interest in something he really gets. This is the case of the first dibs , or in some cases simply dibs . Calling DIBS generally leads to the same conclusion - one person gained the right to the first rejection. A person with the first DIBS can choose the most sought -after options, or even decide to pass the situation completely. In this situation, the most important is the exclusive ability to accept or deny ownership without competition.
The origin of this sentence is somewhat murky. Some sources indicate that an ancient child game similar to Jacks used special counters called Dibstones. These Dibstones would be divided among players according to the rules of the game, some of which receive more dibstons than others. It is possible that schoolchildren perhaps informally shortened the name "Dibstones" to a more manageable "DIBS". The "first DIBS" appeared fully formed in American literature around the turn of the 20th century. BritishChildren were allegedly used the term "bags" interchangeably with "DIBS" at the end of the 19th century.
Another theory of his origin concerns the slang word for money. It is assumed that the word DIBS was used informally in the 18th century to describe the basic currency such as the dollar or pound. Although this use of the word DIBS is now considered archaic, it would not be unusual for a 19th century citizen hoping for a million DIBS in the bank. Perhaps the idea of the first DIBS originated from the first section of a large financial heritage or gifts.
One of the most logical theories surrounding this term suggests the corruption of the word "division". It does not seem to be a big jump from "DIV" to "DIB" and the idea of First Dibs suggests a possible division of Wealth. A similar sound phrase "displays up the loot" also suggests that it is "viewers" and "dibbying", in root meaning they are not so far apart. Unfortunately there are not many resources that support SPOjení between "division" and "first DIBS".
