What is Japanese forest grass?

Japanese forest grass is a common name Hakonechloa Macra , one of the types of ornamental grasses that came in Japan. Rather than growing in high straight lines, how many other grasses do, this type of grass grows in fastening the leaves of leaves. The clusters grow to each other so that the plant often expands to a height of about 12 inches (30.5 cm) and sometimes expands both as wide as 2 or 3 feet (61 to 91.4 cm) over time. Leaves, which on average about half an inch (1.27 cm) in width, are golden with longitudinal stripes bright green. Japanese forest grass produces several long, thin stems of flowers around mid -summer, but does not generate viable seeds and in autumn its leaves rotate different shades of bronze or orange. This natural habitat - cool, humid and partially overshadowed - dictates the best conditions for growth for Japanese forest grass in the other part of the world. Although it prefers partial shadow, it can tolerate both full shade and sun, the main effects are that the leaves maIt tends to change lime green or yellow from full shade or yellow to full sunlight. However, grass needs consistently moist soil with good drainage and in a slight climate it grows better than in colder areas.

Gold Japanese forest grass, or Hakonechloa Macra Aureola has been the most common cultivar in North America since the introduction of this grass. New varieties with slightly different characteristics have been developed. For example, Hakonechloa Macra Albio Striata , with green leaves and white stripes, does better in the sun. Hakonechloa Macra Beni Kaze , on the other hand, still prefers a partial shadow, but his leaves change clearly, almost fiery red during the summer.

Japanese forest grass has gained popularity as permanent plants placed along sidewalks or used as boundaries with higher plants behind it. Its slow growth requires the patience of gardeners whoThey use it, but this quality also makes it easy to manage. Its gold and green colors, which are gradually overshadowed towards the red in autumn, are used to create distinctive contrasts with other leaves. This explains its growth in popularity as a decorative garden plant.
