What is Square Dancing?

Square Dancing Today is often considered an energetic and exciting dance on a classical country and western American music. Modern square Dancing shares together with their origin of four pairs, each pair forming one of the sides. Western Square Dancing depends on cooperation as a caller, usually using a microphone, calls movements that required various steps, turn, turn and changes with partners.

Square Dancing has its origin in the 17th century, Quadrille, and also includes movements from Morris Dance in the same period of time. The next steps were added to a square dance from different regions across the US and some form of square dance was often associated with pioneers as they moved to the west. It does not always use the caller and its forms are often defined as a traditional folk dance. Shaw's book is still considered to be a definitive work and model for the Western Square dance. His work includes definitions of more than 40 different steps. He trained dancers and traveled in the US with his dance teams that brought great popularity and interest of the dance Western Square.

During the fifteen years of the publication of Shaw's book, Square Dancing enjoyed significant popularity. Early dances often did not require much advanced practice at work on the feet because the caller managed steps, and explained or showed how each rack was to be done. This is very different from the modern forms of square dance that is practiced today.

Furthermore, square dancers in organized clubs throughout the US often gather for social dances and for dance competitions, the ongoing speech of this beautiful dance form.
