Hrochopotamus Hunt was commissioned in 1615 Maximilian I, Duke of Bavaria. This image has shared many features with Rubens' other parts that were often full of violent images and a feeling of drama.

Some critics of art see art as a representative of the age of an old conflict between man and animal. In this only picture, viewers see not only a hippopotamus and crocodile, but also paintings that indicate the presence of a snake, leopard, horses and dogs. During thisHunting was strictly forbidden about the period of history and only the richest nobles could hunt legally. The image of the hunting scene could be considered a symbol of the state at that time.

This picture also emphasizes the fascination of man with an unknown species and exotic over this time period. At the beginning of the 17th century, traveling was limited, and few men would sometimes have the opportunity to see a hippopotamus or crocodile. This image could have been intended to shock, both because of its violent nature and focus on wild and exotic creatures.

Like many of Rubens's works, hippophop hunting was characterized by strong diagonals that deliberately attract the viewer's eyes from one area of painting to another. The image indicates the danger, tension and strong emotions from the horse and the animal. Viewers are not sure whether a person or animal will win in battle.

This image was one of the four that Rubens completed in which he was the subject of brutal and violentby hunting. The others were bear, wolf and wild boar. In December 2010, a whole set of four paintings was sold in Christie's Auction House in London, including Hichopotamus Hunt for £ 10,000 (around $ 15,000).
