What is Cingulum?

Cingulum is an anatomical term used for a bundle of white matter fibers found in the brain. In plural, it is a cingula. Although this term is best known for its connection with the brain, it is also used for other parts of the body. Cingulum is of Latin origin, which means "belt" or "belt". In ancient Rome, soldiers wore military belts called Cingulum Militare , which were designed to hold their sword and dagger. Specifically, it expands from Cingual Gyrus to entorhinal bark. These regions are part of the cortex, the highest brain items instrumental in human functions such as attention, speech, consciousness and memory.

The creation of the inner boundary of the cortex and buried in the brain is a limbic system. Containing brain structures such as amygdala, front thalamic nuclei, fornix and limbic Cortex, limbic system, according to scientists in the field of medical field, is specifically responsible for human functions such as long -term memory, emotions and smell. Cingulum is part of this particularAbout the system as a communication in the brain. It is able to achieve it with its axons, which are long projections of nerve cells that generate electrical impulses from the body of the cells.

Cingulum comes with its white color from myelin. This is an oily substance that surrounds the axons of the structure. Myelin, which acts as an electrical insulation device, is therefore helpful in accelerating the speed of communication in the brain. In this sense, a bundle of white matter works as a network cable.

Coincidentally, Cingulum is located at the top of Corpus Callosum, which is also part of the limbic system and is responsible for the transmission of communication. However, Corpus Callosum is greater than Cingulum. In fact, it is the largest bundle of white matter in the brain, with a number of axons up to 250 million.

The term cingulum has different meanings. In dentistry is used for a bulge on the front tooth such as a incisor or dog. The term also applies to the pelvic beltand a shoulder known as the Cingulum Membri Pelvini and Cingulum Thoracici Membri.
