What is the difference between the epiphysis and the diaphysis?

Esteps and diaphysis are different parts of long bones or bones found in the limb. The ends of the long bone are referred to as epiphysis and diaphysis is a shaft or the middle part of a long bone. The epiphysis and diaphysis differ in their size, structure and function. The department of the epiphysis and diaphysis is part of the bone known as metaphysis.

One of the main differences between the epiphysis and the diaphysis is their shape. The swollen rounded ends of the long bone are epiphysis. These structures look somewhat similar to clenched fist. Tubular and centrally located, diaphysis forms the main shaft of long bones. The long bone is much larger than the epiphysis. The epiphysis consists of a compact or cortical bone on the outside and on the inside of a spongy or trabecular bone. The compact bone is relatively dense and provides strength. In the epiphysis, the spongy bone is slightly porous and leaves some space for red bone marrow and blood vessels. The porous nature of the spongy bone also lightens the bone weight.

The diaphysis consists of a compact bone surrounding the pulp cavity filled with a relatively porous yellow pulp. Red and yellow marrows are full of blood vessels and capillaries to feed bones. Red marrow contains white and red blood cells and plates. The yellow marrow contains mainly fat cells with some white blood cells.

Functionally, the epiphysis and diaphysis differ very much. The epiphysis is a place of bone growth and is often also a place where the tendon anchor the long bones. In children there is an epiphysis plate between the epiphysis and the metaphýsis. Long bones extended when a new cartilage, made in the epiphysis plate, is pushed to the edge of the epiphysis, while the older cartilaginously, which is located on the diaphysis side of the epiphysis plate, is converted into bones.

When the body completes the growth, the Epiphyseal album ceases to produce a new cartilage. The cartilage in the plate area is gradually transformed into bones.
