Anatomical structure: the vocal cords and glottis are called glottis. The vocal cords are composed of the vocal folds and their vocal ligaments and vocal cord muscles. There are two pairs of sagittal mucosal folds on the two side walls of the middle of the laryngeal cavity. The upper part is the vestibular ridge and the lower one is the vocal ridge. The middle part of the anterior horn of the thyroid cartilage is connected to the vocal cord process of the condylar cartilage.
The glottis are open in an inverted "V" shape. This position is in the process of inspiration, the air passes through the glottis and reaches the lungs without any resistance. When sounding, the glottis is closed in an "I" shape. In the closed state, the exhaled air flows through the glottis, causing the vocal cords to vibrate. When the vocal cords vibrate, a series of airflow pulses are generated and converted into a series of acoustic energy pulse signals to form the basic sound source of speech. This is the voice (or phonation). The movement of the vocal cords is the source of vibrations generated by speech.
Only when the glottal closing time is consistent with the air exhalation time can a natural voice appear. If the glottis is not fully closed, the voice will sound too heavy. And the glottis is too tightly closed, which can cause the voice to be too harsh. The glottis cannot be closed too quickly or too slowly, which produces a relaxed and harmonious voice.
The glottis is also an important transitional organ between the stomach and the trachea. Generally, after entering the trachea, the particulate matter is removed by the mucus and villi system on the surface of the organ, and a part of it enters the digestive tract through the glottis for processing.
