What is combustion analysis?

In chemistry, the combustion analysis is used to determine the atomic composition of the substance. Using this method, the chemist can take a precisely measured weight of the unknown substance and burn it under controlled conditions to analyze the combustion products and thus determine the empirical pattern of the sample. The empirical formula of the substance refers to the type of atoms that form the substance, and the relative numbers of each type of atom, expressed as the simplest ratio in the whole numbers. For this reason, the empirical formula in organic chemistry is sometimes referred to as the simplest formula.

While the methods of combustion analysis may allow scientists to determine the empirical formula of the unknown substance, it does not provide information about the molecular formula or the structural formula of the substance. These two formulas provide additional information that cannot be detected by combustion analysis. The molecular change is similar to an empirical formula, except that in addition to the type and relative ratio of each type of atom, it also shows the absolute number of atoms in each substance molecule.
