What are 3G networks?
Third generation or 3G networks represent an international standard for wide cell networks that replace 2G networks. The main advantage of the 3G network is the use of a wider radio spectrum, which results in faster data transmission for advanced multimedia services and more network capacity. Carriers can provide these benefits with reduced costs compared to 2G network technologies, although the physical implementation of the 3G network may be expensive in some cases.

Alternatively, if you are considering CDMA carriers, look for one of the above CDMA2000 flavors. Be alert for newer technologies.
