What Is a Band Equalizer?

Equalizer is an electronic device that can separately adjust the amplification of electrical signals of various frequency components. It can compensate the defects of speakers and sound fields by adjusting the electrical signals of different frequencies, and compensate and modify various sound sources. Among other special effects, the equalizer on a general mixer can only adjust the electric signals at three frequencies: high frequency, intermediate frequency, and low frequency. In communication systems, inserting an equalizer in the baseband system can reduce the impact of inter-symbol interference.

The signals transmitted by various transmission channels generally consist of components with different frequencies. Within the signal frequency range, if the amplitude-frequency characteristic of the channel is a constant value; the characteristic of the phase changing with f is a straight line, which can be written as

If the distortion exceeds the allowable amount, an equalizer is used to correct the channel characteristics.
The requirement for equalization is related to the nature of the signal. Because the human ear is not sensitive to the phase, when transmitting analog telephone signals, only the amplitude-frequency characteristics of the channel are required. When transmitting TV signals, the amplitude and phase frequency characteristics of the channel are required, otherwise the image will be distorted. When digital signal baseband transmission, the amplitude and phase frequency characteristics are required, because the waveform distortion will generate inter-symbol interference and increase the bit error rate. When transmitting a digital signal carrier, there is no requirement for the phase cut in the phase frequency characteristics of the channel. This is because a phase reference is not required when receiving a digital frequency modulated signal, and a phase recovery can be used to resolve the phase reference when receiving a digital phase modulated signal. In this way, only carrier-frequency characteristics and delay-frequency characteristics are required for carrier transmission.
