What is a Mobile VPN?
A mobile virtual private network (mobile VPN) is a network configuration in which mobile devices access a virtual private network (VPN) or an intranet when migrating from one physical location to another.

- An effective mobile virtual private network (mobile VPN) provides users with continuous services and seamlessly converts access technologies and multiple public and private networks.
- An article on SearchMobileComputing.com explains the requirements for mobile VPNs and how they work:
- PPTP, IPsec, and SSL VPN use IP addresses to identify devices at the far end of a secure encrypted link. This works well for users who securely encrypt links from fixed devices, such as home PCs that connect to residential broadband, laptops that connect to hotel LANs, or even PDAs that are in Wi-Fi hotspots. But when operating these devices, physical connections, network attachment points, and IP addresses can all change. A traditional VPN client cannot survive such changes. If the link is broken, the application session is disconnected, or the user times out, the user must restart the business communication from the beginning.
- Columbitech, Ecutel, IBM, ipUnplugged, Motorola, NetMotion, Nokia, Padcom and Radio IP and other mobile virtual private network (mobile VPN) vendors have clearly adapted to these changes. In a mobile VPN, a VPN server is still on the edge of your company's network, and secure link access is achieved through an authenticated and authorized VPN. But the mobile VPN link is not bound to the physical IP address. Instead, each link is bound to a logical IP address. This logical IP address is attached to the mobile device, no matter where the device is located. For example, a mobile VPN client can:
- Roam from one wireless access point to another at a public Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Leave Wi-Fi coverage and start using a 3G connection.
- Leave 3G coverage and start using a slower 2G connection.
- Go back to the office and start using a fixed Ethernet LAN connection.
- In this example, the mobile virtual private network (mobile VPN) client uses four or five different physical IP addresses but only one logical IP address. Applications running on this mobile device and inside the corporate network communicate through a logical IP address, independent of user activity and related physical / network changes. [2]
