How Do I Become a Plant Pathologist?

Liu Yi (1923-), Lushun, modern Chinese plant pathologist, agricultural educator. Graduated from the Department of Plant Pathology, College of Agriculture, Peking University in 1947. One of the leaders in the Chinese plant virus discipline. The first research on the molecular biology and genetic engineering of fungal vector-borne plant viruses was conducted in China, and a systematic research system for fungal-borne viruses was established. He has made many contributions to the construction and development of the Chinese Agricultural Biology Department and the cultivation and management of high-level talents in agricultural education.

Liu Yi (1923-), Lushun people, modern China
Liu Yi, born in rural Lushun in December 1923, moved to Shenyang with her parents when she was 5 years old. He finished elementary and middle school in Shenyang. During middle school, influenced by the works of progressive classmates, Lu Xun and Ba Jin, he participated in the Anti-Japanese Peripheral Organization "Reading Club" and secretly read anti-Japanese propaganda materials, so he gave up the opportunity to study art in Tokyo Art School in Japan. His family moved to Beijing in 1941, and in 1943 he was admitted to the agronomy department of the then Peking University Agricultural College. During college, Liu Yi had a wide range of interests, read a lot of literary and artistic works, and was admitted to the Sculpture Department of Peiping Art College in 1945 for one year. In the spring of 1946, he was expelled from the school for a visit to the liberated area of Zhangjiakou. After that, he returned to the Department of Plant Pathology of Peking University Agricultural College and graduated in 1947.
After graduating from university, Liu Yi stayed on as a teaching assistant under the guidance of Yu Dazhen and Lin Chuanguang, with mycology experiments, as well as "general plant pathology" and "agricultural plant pathology" experiments, and taught some courses. During this period, under the guidance of Yu Dazhen, he did some monospore isolation and cultivation of Monoascus sp. Ascospores with an optical microscope. In October 1949, Beijing Agricultural University was established. In 1956, the state sent Liu Yi to study plant virology at the Department of Biology of Moscow University of the Soviet Union, and to learn electron microscopy at the Institute of Microbiology of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. During this period, he read a lot of books and literature and learned a lot, laying the foundation for plant virology. After returning to China in 1962, Liu Yi worked in the plant virus group led by Qiu Weifan. He has lectured on special topics such as plant virus diagnosis, electron microscope technology, and supervised graduation thesis for college students. He is also engaged in the research of cucurbit virus (squash) virus disease and soybean mosaic disease.
In 1979,
Liu Yi has been the third and fourth vice chairman of the Chinese Society of Plant Pathology since 1985, and the fifth chairman in 1994. He is also the fourth and fifth members of the Chinese Science and Technology Association, and a director of the International Society of Plant Pathology in 1996.

1947-1952 Assistant professor, College of Agriculture, Peking University, Department of Plant Pathology, Beijing Agricultural University.
1953-1957 Lecturer, Department of Plant Protection, Beijing Agricultural University.
