What Are the Different Types of Christian Higher Education?

Christianity attaches great importance to education. The contribution of early Christianity to education is to treat people from different social classes and ethnic backgrounds equally, and that men and women receive education equally. Medieval education mainly focused on the training of church leaders and clergy over ordinary individuals at the religious or political level. During the Renaissance, the focus was gradually shifted from monks to secular people, but mostly children and social elites of the upper classes. The Protestant Reform of the century also indirectly contributed to the development of universal education and a school system with elementary, intermediate, and university. Before the founding of China, many schools were founded by Christianity or the Catholic Church. Some of these universities can be said to be world-class universities at that time. Although the church universities in China were generally small, most of them had their own characteristics, especially in agronomy, Leading position and great contribution in medical and women's higher education.

Development of Christian Education Foreign Schools in China

The reason why there are foreign schools in China is mainly founded by missionaries. While establishing missionary bases, the missionaries successively established foreign schools. During the sixty years before 1900, the foreign missionaries opened by missionaries in China could be divided into three stages, from 1840 to 1860. The first stage was the second stage from about 1860 to 1875, and the third stage was from 1875 to 1899. [1]
In the first stage, the missionaries mainly opened foreign schools in churches in Hong Kong and Hong Kong. They were small in scale and belonged to elementary schools. The purpose was to "open the way for the spread of the gospel". All accommodations and even travel expenses are provided by the school, and the enrollment targets are the children of poor believers or homeless beggars. The Catholic Church has also begun enrolling some religious children in the Mainland. At this stage, the church opened about 50 foreign schools with about 1,000 students.
During the second phase, the Qing government began to set up a few foreign schools for foreign affairs, namely the Tongwen Hall and the Guang Dialect Hall. In order to distinguish them from the schools run by missionaries, the schools run by missionaries are generally called church schools. Until about 1875, the total number of church schools increased to about 800, with about 20,000 students. Church schools at this stage are still dominated by primary schools, but a small number of church middle schools have appeared, accounting for about 7% of the total.
The third stage was from 1875 to 1899, the total number of church schools increased to about 2,000, and the number of students increased to about 40,000 or more. Middle schools account for about 10%, and universities have begun to appear. In fact, the number of college classes added to the middle school base is less than 200. Among them, the famous Shanghai John's College was merged by the Peiya School and the Duen School in 1879, and later the Shanghai Saint John University was formed. In 1881 Lin Lezhi opened the Chinese and Western Academy in Shanghai, and later formed Soochow University. Gezhi Academy opened in Guangzhou in 1889, and later formed Lingnan University.

Development and Contribution of Christian Education

development of
In the late 19th century, Catholicism and Protestantism began to establish some higher education institutions in China. By the 1920s, churches had become a big sight. Church universities have spread all over East China, North China, South China, and Southwest China.
There were 23 church universities during the Republic of China. Among them, there are 20 Protestant universities: In October 1919, they participated in the Conference of Chinese University Presidents in Shanghai, and formed 14 Chinese Church Universities in China Church University Association.
The fourteen universities are: Yanjing University, Qilu University, Jinling Women's University, Jinling University, Soochow University, Hujiang University, St. John's University, Zhijiang University, Fujian Union University, Lingnan University, Changsha Yali University, Hubei Wenhua College, Wuchang Boshu Academy (Wuhua College University Department, Boshu Academy University Department, Boxing College University Department merged to form Huazhong University), West China Union University. The fourteen universities had all liberal arts courses at the time, most of them offered science or engineering. For the sake of brevity, these universities are often referred to as "14 schools in China."
contribution
In the cultural exchange between China and the West, church schools naturally also have innate advantages. They have opened a precedent for studying abroad in modern China. In 1846, American missionary Brown sent three senior students from the Morrison School to Rong Hong, Huang Kuan, and Huang Sheng to the United States to study. Since these three students are children of poor people, the church also sent alimony to their parents during their study abroad for a period of not less than two years. Later, except Huang Sheng returned to Hong Kong due to illness, Huang Kuan and Rong Hong both learned to return to China. Huang Kuan became the first Chinese western doctor to receive formal training from a medical university. Rong Hong, after returning from Yale University, is committed to sending young children to study in the United States. Later, he led 120 young children to study in the United States, leaving an important fortune in modern Chinese history.
Church universities have a high starting point, citing Western institutions of higher education, and there are many famous teachers in each school. Each school has its own personality and special specialty. For example, the Department of Sociology and the Department of Journalism at Yenching University has influence throughout the world. There is also the law department of Soochow University. In the "Tokyo Trial" after World War II, most of the Chinese judges came from Soochow University. There is also Chinese in Hujiang University, such as Xu Zhimo, who studied at Hujiang University (now Shanghai University of Science and Technology). Medical disciplines are the strengths of church universities. The medical disciplines of Xiehe Medical College, Xiangya Medical College, Qilu University and other universities have cultivated the best medical talents for China.
Mission schools have distinct western religious and cultural characteristics, but at the same time, they have also achieved outstanding results in the spread and research of Chinese culture. At that time, many church schools not only taught new science courses such as mathematics, science, and chemistry, but also limitedly taught traditional Chinese culture, including the "Three Character Classics", "Thousand Characters", "Family Names", "Four Books", The Five Classics.
Church universities are important places for cultural exchanges between China and the West. Many leaders of church universities have advocated that church universities absorb the essence of Chinese and Western cultures and make them have obvious cultural communication functions. The Harvard-Yenching Institute is world-famous. Many famous Chinese scholars have done research on historical classics and cultural relics and archaeology in this institution. Today it is still the first-class institution of international sinology research in the United States. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, West China Union University and well-known scholars who moved to Chengdu, Yanjing University, Jinling University, Qilu University, and Jinling Women's College of Arts and Sciences, jointly established the East-West Cultural Society. The charter stipulates that "The Society liaises with scholars at home and abroad to review the value of Eastern and Western cultures in an objective and critical spirit, and to exchange ideas directly, and work together for the integration of culture and the construction of a new culture." After the establishment of the society, it organized many activities and researches, and conducted extensive cultural exchanges between China and the West.

Examples of leading Christian education universities

Before the founding of China, many universities were founded by the Christian or Catholic Church, which can be said to be world-class universities at that time. Although Chinese church universities are generally not large in scale, most of them have their own characteristics, especially in agriculture, medicine, and women's higher education. After the 1920s, with the acceleration of the localization process, religious functions of church universities gradually weakened, education functions increased, and social ties were continuously strengthened and served the society. It not only through its own professional talents, but also through the professional practice of teachers and students at school, directly contribute to China's modernization in several areas, such as the agricultural improvement and rural survey of Jinling University, the Department of Journalism of Yanjing University With the Department of Sociology, the library major of Huahua University of Huazhong University, the comparative law of Soochow University, St. John's Business, etc., all have outstanding performance in society. [2]
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, no organization or individual can engage in religious activities in colleges and universities. The clarification of the relationship between religion and colleges also means that church universities will not continue to exist. In 1952, these church universities were split and merged into other universities. in. [3]
St. John's University
Saint John's University, formerly known as John's College, was founded in 1877 by Bishop Schroeder of the American Anglican Church in Shanghai. It is China's first university taught in English and uses "light and truth" as its motto. It is nicknamed "Oriental Harvard" and "Diplomatic Talent Training Institute", and it has set many firsts in the education of the Republic of China, especially in physical education. St. John's University is one of the most famous universities in modern China, and it is also the longest church school in China. [3]
The educational content of St. John's University is a typical colonial education. Pizhiwen, the first American missionary to be sent to China in the early days, once said: "As long as we are given the opportunity and sufficient funds to educate the entire generation, just as the law that governs thought must be the same for all generations, so is education. Certainly it can have a greater impact on morality, society, and national character than any land and navy force in the same period, more prosperous business stimuli, and any combination of any or all other means. " [4]
Buddhism runs St. John's University based on this belief. When the school laid the foundation for the first teaching building on April 14, 1879, Bishop Schroeser delivered an impromptu speech, emphasizing that education is important to all countries, especially China, and it is extremely important to educate Chinese youth with Christian truth. He said, "What we need is to train Chinese youth to serve Christ. I believe that the true believers in China must be Chinese." This is also the fundamental purpose of St. John's University. [4] In 1952, St. John's University was dissolved after being split into major universities in Shanghai. St. John's University's original site was given to East China University of Political Science and Law. The school has cultivated a large number of outstanding figures who have influenced Chinese history, such as Lin Yutang, Zhang Ailing, Zou Taofen, Gu Weijun, Song Ziwen, Rong Yiren, Liu Hongsheng, Bei Yiming, and Shi Zhaoji.
Yenching University
Yenching University (Yenching University) was established in 1916. It is co-organized by five Christian missions, namely the Presbyterian Church in the United States, the American-American-American Church, the American-American-American Women's Association, the Congregational Church, and the London Club in the United Kingdom. As the first Christian theological research institute in China, Yanjing University s School of Religion has been the undisputed leader of higher theological education in China. It has been hailed as the first-class theological education institution in the Far East. It is the earliest college established by Yanda University. It is "a crucial part of a church institution" for this famous university. It has also played a pivotal role in university affairs. The Religious College of Yanjing University is known for its academic freedom. The center of Christian liberal theology. [5]
Yenching University was established as an integral part of the missionary business, to provide educational facilities for the children of Christians, or even more to train church staff. This auxiliary function is the only reason it can ask for a school on Chinese land, and the only hope for financial support. American missionary Stuart Rayden was appointed president of Yanjing University on January 31, 1919. He hoped to make Yanjing University more attractive than other church universities. In order to implement this policy, he proposed the following four measures. : [4]
(1) The purpose of Christianity. To achieve this goal, it is not to force students to believe in religion and participate in religious rituals, but to create an atmosphere that makes students feel good about Christianity. It is good that students can become believers when they graduate, but they can praise the church and have an affection for their alma mater even if they have not been baptized.
(2) Raise the academic standards of the school and provide more vocational subjects that provide employment opportunities. On the one hand, it is to compete with government schools, and on the other hand, it is for Yanjing University graduates to occupy positions in key domestic departments, which can affect China's political situation.
(3) It is necessary to make Yanjing University a Chinese-style environment and at the same time international in order to promote international mutual understanding. This is the only practical guarantee for cultivating a world citizen with patriotism.
(4) The funding sources of the school must not be interrupted. The missions and consortiums must be satisfied. Chinese celebrities are also willing to donate. Tuition fees are high.
In the adjustment of faculties in Chinese universities in 1952, Yanjing University was cancelled. After the mainland Chinese government moved to Taiwan, Yenching University was incorporated into the Chung Chi College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Hong Kong. In mainland China, its assets were merged after the takeover by the Chinese government. Liberal arts and sciences were merged into Peking University, engineering sciences were merged into Tsinghua University, law schools and sociology departments were merged into Beijing University of Political Science and Law (now China University of Political Science and Law). The school building was received by Peking University, and the building is still a monument of Yanjing University. [3]
