What is erotophobia?

erotophobia can mean different things depending on the context in which it is used, even if it generally concerns fear or negative attitudes towards gender and human sexuality. Using in a clinical or psychological context, this term usually refers to a literal phobia in which one experiences fear or panic when confronted with sexuality, or a general descriptor of man's attitudes to sex. Erotophobia can also be used in contexts outside psychology and mental health and often describes social or personal attitudes concerning sex and how individuals perceive human sexuality. Erotophobia is often used in a psychological context with one of the two somewhat different meanings. When used in a very accurate way, refer to a specific psychological state, it refers to an intense and often irrational fear of sex asexuality. Someone who suffers erotophobia often experiences intense feelings of fear and panic, often associated with physical reactions such as accelerated breathing, faster heart rYtmus and increased sweating when confronted with situations or gender images. This fear can be purely irrational, or it may be the result of testimony of violent sexual acts or because it has been the victim of sexual abuse.

erotophobia can also relate to a more general psychological attitude of sex and human sexuality, both in terms of acceptance and tolerance. In this use, this term is often part of a sliding scale with regard to how people generally perceive human sexuality. At one end are those who could be described as erotophobic. They may be intolerant of depicting sexuality, probably not discussing sex openly or freely, and the use of contraception and decreased sexual educational can be reduced by those who can be erotophobic. At the other end of the scale are those who are marked as erotophilians who are open to sex and withXuality, often more accepting sex and talk more often about sex, including sex education and the use of contraception.

The term "erotophobia" is also often used with regard to society and individuals in general and understanding how sex is perceived by others. Someone can speak of erotophobia in Western civilization as a general description of how people in the US or Europe perceive gender and sexuality. It is often used in criticism of literature or film to indicate how the artist has dealt with sex and sexuality, and can also be used to describe how others see works of art that depicts sex. However, there is some criticism of the term itself because it groups "sex" in a single point of view, despite the complicated nature of human sexuality.
