What is verbal fluency?
Verbal fluency is a term used to describe the speed at which someone can produce words. In certain types of neurological assessments, verbal fluency tests are used to collect information about the patient and are sometimes used in psychological profiles and tests. It is important to note that there is no sign of passage/failure for such tests and that high or low vocabulary is not necessarily correlated with intelligence. For example, the patient may be asked to generate an animal list or a list of words starting with "P" in 60 seconds. The test manager remarks how many words are generated and can also realize which words are coming. Once the period is completed, the patient does not have to generate any new words. Several studies have shown that in most patients the number of words produced at the beginning is higher than at the end of the time.
There are a number of things that cant decrease in verbal fluency. Some individuals with disabilities have lower vocabulary and also decrease when people have neurological problems. Traumatic brain injuries, cancer, degenerative neurological diseases and simple aging can all cause a decrease in verbal fluency. Since neurologists know which brain areas are involved in words, a decrease in verbal fluency or low basic speed may indicate that there may be a problem in one of these areas.
people can be very intelligent and not very verbally smoothly and vice versa. Thus, these types of tests are not good scales of intelligence, although they can predict communication skills and the ability to respond quickly when involved in verbal interactions. People with high verbal fluidity can also be able to write quickly, if there, they are literate. These tests also do not test the speed and equipment of verbal processing.
Some psychological profiles can use such tests and these tests BYly in studies specially used to learn more about how the brain works. Obviously, as children develop, their verbal fluency tends to increase because they gain more words and learn more about concepts. Studying language development in children can provide an interesting insight into the ways in which the brain evolves, and what happens if the connection in the brain does not take place, or when the development goes wrong for some reason. These tests can also be used to assess the recovery or progress of the neurological condition.
