What should I know about plasma donation?
plasma gifts may not be as common as blood donation, although these two procedures are relatively similar. Plasma forms part of your blood and the main difference in the procedure is that your red blood cells are separated from plasma by a process called plasmapheresis. When you donate plasma, some of the red blood cells are recycled back to the body after they have been separated from the plasma.
There are several amazing things that can be done with blood plasma. For example, this can help people who have problems with blood clotting. Much of the collected blood plasma can be used by pharmaceutical companies, and when you make a plasma gift, you usually don't have to determine how your plasma is used. Another difference is that many people are paid for gift of plasma, which usually does not apply to blood donation. Compensation is not huge, but can be about $ 15-25 (USD) for a gift. Not all collectors pay and some organizations like American Red Cross, ask you to donate without reward.
The collection of the center projects for certain types of things. If you have recently traveled to a foreign country, you are promiscuous or used intravenous drugs, you have the potential to pass on diseases to others. It is not possible to lie about this behavior because your plasma used by another person could have potentially fatal consequences. Collection centers will also look at your health, weight, behavior, any prescription medicines that you could take, and are likely to test your blood for anemia. Some centers also test the high blood sugar content.
Some people participate in plasma gifts twice a week and theoretically, if you are very healthy, your plasma should be fully renewed within 48 hours after the gift. However, organizations like the Red Cross will allow you to donate only once a month or twelve times a year. Other collection centers will allow people to people twice a week, but it may not be in your best health interests. There is evidence thatRegular weekly plasma donations can affect health, energy and immunity. Get $ 25 twice a week is not worth if you get sick or feel the disease.
If you provide a plasma gift, most centers claim that the overall process can take up to two hours. People who often donate can be in and out of the center in about 45 to an hour. After donating you will need a snack and most centers have cookies and juice. Bring something you can read and don't forget to use a bathroom before you give plasma because you can't stop this process in the middle.
Some people consider plasma donation to be something that only people who are desperate, but it is not. There are many students who donate plasma, and some people donate plasma to help ailing family members who need it. If you are considering a gift in a plasma as a source of income, be only a limited amount of income and many plasma centers have much more free restrictionsthan the Red Cross. The ability to donate more often is not always in the best interest of donors.
