What is a bad sector?

The wrong sector is a term used when one of the smallest storage units on a hard drive on a computer is no longer usable. A bad sector means one or many sectors on a unit can no longer be read or written to a computer. While the bad sector means that this small part of the unit can no longer be used, this does not necessarily mean that the entire drive has failed.

The term came from discs to storage a plate style, where a spinning, circular plate reads and written with heads that are able to translate magnetic fields on the plate. The disc plate is divided into different parts for storage, the smallest part is a sector that can contain data in sizes 512 bytes and higher, depending on the disk. The hard disk plate can be visualized as a circular racetrack. It consists of many concentric rings, which are further divided into small segments called sectors where the data is stored. In the case of the Bad Sector, there is something on the track that can no longer be driven.

The causes of bad sectors are diverse. If a bad sector occurs, it is most likely due to a physical disk problem, unlike the problem of software or operating system. The first place that one is likely to hear about the wrong sector is when the computer's software starts to play.

It is not normally possible to repair the wrong sector. Spinning plates eventually wear out, so there are several bad sectors inevitable and the average computer user rarely noticed. Only when many bad sectors begin to appear, that the drive is facing immediate and complete failure.

Most computer operating systems now come with some units monitoring software. To help solve this problem, disk units manufacturers have also implemented the software on these Drives that monitor the health of the disk. System of self -government, analysis and analysis and reporting (reportingIntelligent), which is built into many hard drives, can communicate with software on a computer that warns users when something goes wrong with the disc.

As the media of solid states became more and more popular, the deadline for the bad sector has reached these types of storage media. However, there are no traces on the media, such as Flash Memory. Instead, a number of transistors work with electronic signals. In this case, the nickname of the wrong sector is used to identify where the transistor as a failure.
