What is the device driver?

The device driver is a computer file that allows the operating system (OS) to communicate and control hardware connected to this computer correctly. Different devices often require different drivers to function correctly, although the OS will usually have default drivers installed for a number of devices to allow minimal functionality with such devices. However, in order to use the full function of many devices on the computer, it is necessary to install the correct drivers. The device driver will usually be provided with hardware to install the device manufacturer, although they can usually be downloaded and installed as well.

While there are many different specific types of drivers, the device is generally a file that allows the computer to be properly communicated with the corresponding device. Such drivers are needed for almost any type of device on the computer, including the motherboard, universal ports of serial bus (USB), Ethernet ports, printers, network adapters and graphics cards. GrantEjm, if these devices are relatively simple, then the default OS drivers can be sufficient to operate the system properly. However, to ensure proper compatibility, a device driver with a new device or hardware will often have to be installed.

When the computer starts, the hardware functions of the computer are processed by the basic input/output system (BIOS) on the computer motherboard. This system is able to communicate with several basic pieces of hardware, usually a monitor, keyboard and discs, without the need for drivers of the device for these devices. Although this feature may be limited, it is usually enough to start a computer and install OS. Once it is done, the BIOS is subsequently used for initial startup, then the functions are handed over to OS for continuing operations.

Some older OS types would use BIOS while the operating system ran to communicate with hardware. When newlyThe systems have replaced this older method by direct control of the device using OS, new means to allow the OS to use the device. It uses the OS on the computer to achieve this function for each device driver. The default device driver installed with OS on a computer usually allows the basic functions of some devices, such as displaying images from the graphics card to the monitor. More advanced features, such as proper rendering of advanced computer graphics using a graphics card, usually require specific drivers that can be installed with hardware.
