What is a Metacharacter?

The regular expression language consists of two basic character types: literal (normal) text characters and metacharacters. Metacharacters make regular expressions capable. The so-called metacharacters are those special characters that have special meaning in regular expressions. They can be used to specify the appearance pattern of the leading characters (that is, characters that precede the metacharacters) in the target object.
