What Is a Public Key Certificate?

A public key certificate, usually simply referred to as a certificate, is a digitally signed statement that binds the value of a public key to the identity of the person, device, or service holding the corresponding private key. Most general-purpose certificates are based on the X.509v3 certificate standard. To learn more about public key encryption, see Resources: Public Key Structure.
