What is a candle?

The

foot candle is a measure of brightness or light intensity. It is an imperial measuring unit, unlike a more common lux, which is based on the international system of units (SI) or metric system. Leg candles are mainly used in film and photography, but can also be used in horticulture. Candela is a unit of light intensity and is a fixed unit in the same way as a meter or kilogram works. Candela was originally known simply as "one candle", where it is called Foot candle. This is a unit of that strong light is known for the human eye, known as the luminous flux. One foot candle is equivalent to casting lighting with a luminous flux of one lumen on the surface of one square foot.

Metric or putting the equivalent of the "derived SI" unit is Lux. One candle is the same light intensity as 10.764 lux. Many people simply use the conversion ratio of individual conversion, especially with larger areas. This is partly for comfort and partly protrumO that most light intensity measuring methods have enough span of error that this less accurate conversion makes a small or no practical difference.

There are a number of situations where a candle can be used. One example is to set the TV or film studio lighting to ensure that the lighting is adequate and to ensure that the light used is consistent between scenes and shooting on different days. Another example is museums where old paintings and artifacts need to be stored under controlled lighting to avoid fading. In both of these uses, the leg candle is a somewhat outdated unit, as people and is more likely to use digital equipment such as a luxury meter that is calibrated to use luxury units rather than candles.

The measurement is also used in horticulture. Can be particularly useful in growing plants that may be particularly sensitive toLight such as orchids. People measuring the light for these purposes are more likely to use cheaper light meters, which are more likely to calibrate in leg candles, compared to expensive light meters that tend to use LUX.
