What is the mud pump?
The mud pump is a large pump used to move heavy drilling fluid, known as mud, when drilling oil. The pump circulates the mud by pushing it down into the hole and then moving it back up. Mud pumps are reciprocal pumps, which means they use oscillating pistons or Plungers to push fluid.
The pump is one acting pump, so the liquid will only move in one direction. A hole is drilled into the ground, or well, and the mud is pushed by the mud pump down the pipe to the bottom of the hole. The pressure then forces mud up the ring or the space that surrounds the pipe.
The "mud" used is drilling for oil consists of emulsified water or oil, clay and chemicals. For safety reasons, it is adapted to specific chemical drilling conditions. Its purpose is to float rock cuts from the hole, clean the bottom of the hole and cool the drilling device. It also acts as an initial barrier in case of outbreaking pressure from any fluid in the rock that wouldShe could enter the well.
Most modern mud pumps are triplex pumps that have three cylinders. Older oil platforms or those in developing countries can still use duplex pumps that have only two cylinders. Some newer pumps have up to six cylinders.
The pump is a key piece of machines in the oil drilling process. The drilling process begins with a rotating borehole on the drilling set to throw a hole in the ground. After drilling the hole, the tube is inserted into the well to ensure that it maintains its shape and structure. Within this case, a smaller drill is used to drill and another tube is located in this hole, known as a case. It is common for up to five holes, each of which is slightly smaller than others, to be bored when drilling oil.
As the drill cut the rock, the mud pump moves these cutouts on the well. Rock cuttings are promoted by a "shake" that removes them from BAHon. The mud is then re -used by a mud pump. This process continues until the well is drilled to its full depth.
