What is magnolol?
Magnolol is a bioactive compound extracted from magnolia officinalis , the scientific name of a particular species of magnolia originating from China. The compound is one of the active ingredients in the bark of magnolia, the other is its sister compound Honokiol. Magnolol has antifungal properties and can also show antibacterial, antiallergic and antioxidant properties.
Although the interest in magnolia has seen an increase in recent years, Magnolia Bark has been used for about 2,000 years in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine. Ancient use indicated that the bark was effective for various diseases related to the stomach and intestines. These reported use of magnolol include improving diarrhea, alleviating menstrual convulsions and gas and flatulence treatment. The calming effect on the stomach of the compound was also associated with a relief of nausea and vomiting.
