What is Norethisterone?

Norethisterone is a progestin, which means it is a synthetic version of a hormone -called progestogen that is naturally produced in the human body of the ovaries and the placenta. The most common natural form of progestogen is progesterone, which affects several functions related to the reproductive system of women such as pregnancy, embryos and menstruation. Norethisterone works similar to natural progesterone and is used in oral contraceptives, to treat painful and irregular menstruation, delay of the period and to treat women who experience very severe bleeding during their period. It is also used to treat premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and postmenopausal syndrome. At higher doses, it can be used as part of breast cancer treatment.

This synthetic hormone was successfully manufactured in 1951 and was used in one of the first types of contraceptive markets of the market at the age of 60. As a cure for antNorethisterone can prevent pregnancy from preventing ovulation, which means release of the egg from the ovaries, but it is not guaranteed to do so in all women. It also densify mucus in the cervix, a narrow part of the uterus, where it connects to the vagina, and affects the lining of the uterus itself. Thickened mucus in the cervix makes it difficult to enter the uterus to fertilize the eggs, and the effect on the uterus lining makes it difficult to join and develop.

Norethisterone is a common active substance in the type of oral contraceptive called pill only progestogen (POP) or mini-pill. It can also be used in combined oral contraceptive pills that include progestogen and other type of hormone called estrogen. Combined oral contraceptive pills prevent ovulation more efficiently than Norethisterone, but there is an increased risk of forming blood clots veins using this type of contraception. Such blood clots are rare but may be fatal if they are transported byRunning system in the lungs. One should consult a doctor immediately if he is experiencing serious headaches, sudden changes in vision, swelling of the legs or chest pain when using Norethisterone.

The common side effects of norethisterone include fine breasts, bloating and bleeding between regular periods. Less common side effects include nausea, headaches, weight gain and dizziness. Those with a history of stroke or heart attack or those who have liver problems or kidney problems should not take Norethisterone.
