What are alms?

Alms are material goods given to the poor as an act of mercy, charity or kindness. Almsgiving practice is a very important feature of many religions; For example, in Islam, giving alms is one of the five pillars of Islam, the basic deeds that all loyal Muslims must perform. Outside religion, many cultures have a general commitment to kindness and charity and acknowledges that the needy should not be ignored by people of good character. In other cases, such as Christianity, people are not obliged to give alms, but almsgiving is generally expected. A Christian who does not contribute to charity could be perceived with the suspicion of other Christians, because they might doubt the Christian virtue of the person.
