What is a blockbuster?
Blockbusting is a discriminatory practice of housing that has been banned in many regions of the world, although documented blockbuster cases continue to appear. A few steps are involved in the blockbuster, with the final result of avoiding one group of people from the neighborhood and their replacement of another. Blockbusting often plays the fear and racially aimed emotions that manipulate people, and some people claim that this technique has become less effective because people are more open integrated communities. In a typical blockbuster scenario, a real estate broker would direct the black family to the White Quarter and maybe sold them a house at a discounted price. Then the real estate agency would notice the paper with leaflets, suggesting that more blacks move and offer buying homes for cash, with a discount so that white owners can move home quickly. THEN, houses would be sold to more members of the black community, usually at inflated prices.
This practice is harmful in many ways. First it hurts families that are forced to leave using tacticsFear, because their homes lose value and can loss. People who decide to stay behind can be subjected to intimidation tactics, such as leaving houses empty to create an abandoned feeling in the neighborhood, which is even more.
for the movement of the community, the blockbuster exposes people inflated with housing and ferocious lending. Historically, a blockbuster often walked hand in hand with racist practices in banks and title societies, so black families would be forced into ridiculous mortgages if they wanted to buy real estate. The mortgage would often be manipulated to support the market closure, allowing the real estate bridge back, buying a house and selling it for profit.
Blockbusting directly contributed to a white flight in many American cities because the white families left their neighborhood in fear of the influx of minorities. Many neighborhoods also went to a steep decline, thanks to practices like letting housesEmpty and encouraging market closure, and some very fine old neighborhoods were destroyed through blockbusters. It is irony that in some areas a blockbuster came a full circle, because white moved back to ethnic neighborhoods, gentriffs and increased real estate prices so that minorities could not allow to live there.
