What are Mardi Gras Beads?

Mardi gras beads are necklaces that participants of annual Mardi Gras showcase into the crowd. Mardi Gras is usually celebrated 47 days before Easter, known for shows, beads and king cake. People sometimes travel around the world to take part in the Mardi Gras show to catch beads. These beads come in many different colors, shapes and sizes. Some Mardi Gras beads are 12 inches (30.5 cm long), while other necklaces hang to the waist of man. Beads can be small or huge size. Medallions usually hang from the necklace as the jewel; Medallions usually represent Krewe, which throws beads from the float.

While traditional beads have jewelry similar to appearance, they are also popular beads. The cargo necklaces come in many styles, but two popular styles include necklaces in which each individual beads light up and ignite in which the medallion lights up. Until the early 1980s, the beads were thrown into the shows. A man dressed like Santa would ride a float and throw glass beads. In 1900 the official throw of Mardi gras was beads. Due to the cost of glass beads, plastic beads quickly replaced them for use during shows.

Purple, green and gold are the official colors of Mardi Gras beads. Each color is meaningful: purple means justice, Green refers to faith and gold means strength. Although these are the most used colors for Mardi Gras beads, the necklaces of other colors are often thrown on the shows.

Parades consists of floats that are decorated with various "crewes". Krewee members run on floats and throw various objects for the people of the show. Traditionally, people scream "throw me something, sir", and in return they get beads or small things. KoThe rails are not the only things thrown at the Mardi Gras show; Cups, Dubloons and other small toys can also be thrown.

Doubloons are coins that can be made of metal or wood. These coins are generally the size of a silver dollar. Different colors and emblems of Krewe are used to distinguish Krewe, which throws a certain Dubloon. In some cases, Dubloon is connected to the Mardi Gras bead. Cups, as well as doubleons, can also carry the Krewe character. Each cup can hold approximately 10 ounces (283.5 grams).
