What are some types of secular schools?
People often contrast public schools with sectarian schools without stopping to think that there is actually a wide range of secular schools, including, but not only for public schools. Secular schools, which means “unrelated or not supported by a particular religion or religious group, can have three basic types: public schools, charter schools and private or independent schools.
Public schools are one type of secular schools in the United States. In the US, no public school has religious affiliation, whether it is a primary school or university institution such as college and university. Charter schools are in fact part of the public school system, but have specialized academic disciplines or focus, so they are also by definition of secular school.
Although some private and/or independent schools are sectarian, there is no large number. Those that are not, can have a number of different types. Some private schools are special educational schoolsy, specifically created to serve special residents such as students who are blind or deaf, or students with learning disabilities or behavior problems. Private athletic schools combine athletics with academics in the secular environment.
Business or vocational schools are another type of secular school. A business or vocational school focuses on training students in skills and techniques. This is also a focus for the performance of art schools, albeit in another field of learning.
Many private secular schools are based on specific philosophy or pedagogy. These schools have specialized curriculum and a joint approach with other schools of the same type. Some examples are coalitions of elementary schools, distance education schools, schools in education, Montessori schools, Sudbury Valley and Waldorf School schools.
