What is a carpet shark?

The term carpet shark is used to indicate any of the more than 30 types of shark in the order of octolobiformes , which have colorful, decorated and spotted skin patterns that are said to resemble carpets. Shark carpets can be small or large, lay eggs or give birth to living young and are usually lower feeders that prefer to consume crustaceans or molluscs.

A representative kind of shark carpets will have dorsal fin, small mouth in front of his eyes, no spine, small slots and distinctive barbels or sensory organs hanging near the nose or neck. Although they are all over the world, indo-pacific and Australian regions have the largest concentration of carpet sharks. According to existing fossil records, carpet sharks first appeared in the late Jurassic period and are generally not considered aggressive to humans.

Some types of carpet sharks are decorated and colorful including zebra, decorated with wobbegong and necklace. Zebra SPIt overshadows on the bottom of the ocean during the day, hunt coral cliffs at night for small fish and crustaceans, and has a light blue green body covered with dark spots and combs. A decorative wobbegong is a smaller carpet shark with a maximum length of 3.8 feet (1.1 meters) that lives in the Western Pacific Ocean and is colored as sand with black, brown, orange and white solid spots and saddles. The neckline shark found in Australian waters is thin and tubular with large oval eyes, dark black collar or necklace and white and dark brown spots.

Whale shark is probably for the most famous carpet shark and is considered the largest fish in the world with an average length of 39 feet (12 meters). It is a filter feeder that slowly roams with open sea -challenging plankton and sometimes a small fish with a body that is covered with small yellow and white and stripes. Despite the intimidating size of the whale shark, this kind of legend has a fine giant, which is curious and playful with human divers. The species is considered to be endangered and easilyis hunted because it moves slowly and comes to the surface to feed. Attempts to reproduce this kind of carpet sharks have proved difficult, but several specimens remain exhibited in aquariums in Japan, China and the United States.

Sharks nurses are also members of the Order octolobiformes . This shark is the lower population, but commonly occurs in shallow water at a depth of approximately 3.2 feet (one meter). Sister sharks usually consist in groups in the slots during the day and at night hunt crustaceans, molluscs, snakes and stingrays. Young sister sharks are sometimes sold to home aquarium enthusiasts, but this practice has been criticized because the shark will eventually grow any domestic tank and should not be released into the ocean.
