What is a fire hydrant?

Fire hydrant is a tube that allows water to flow from the water supply with valve control to require fire. The above -ground fire hydrants came from the 18th century, but the underground type was used in Asia and Europe as early as the 17th century. In the United States, the hydrant can also be called a "fire plug" or "Johnny pump", depending on the area.

Before the invention of a fire hydrant, firefighters used a bucket brigade or hand pumping systems to get water to require fire. In order to get water from the water and firefighters would have to dig a hole, and firefighters would pass the buckets of water from the hole along the fire brigade line to help get the water into the fire. Since the newly dug holes had to be connected after the fire, the term "fire stopper" began to be used.

The firefighter connects the fire hose with the hydrant and releases the valve to obtain water from the water water. Different valves on the fire hydrant allow fastened to different water sources that can either be pressurized or not by pressure. MostDraners are designed to allow the hydrant to flow per minute, no less than 250 gallons (950 liters) of water.

Many different patents were used to create various fire hydrants. Wooden outer packaging was used in front of a more famous cast -iron cover that today commonly appears. The American Water Works Association (AWWA) regulates the design of hydrants in the United States to meet the standards of firefighting areas.

dry barrel and wet barrel are two types of fire hydrant. The wet type mainly holds a constant water supply, while the type of dry barrel must have the valve release to release the water. The main benefit of the dry mainly hydrant is that its construction prevents the frozen water supply in a very cold climate. Some wet casual hydrants can be made of bronze rather than iron, or they may have an internal finish that avoids rust.

The barrel of the fire hydrant may also beknown as “Standpipe”. Some are in style, while others have more angular lines. Hydrant terminals are usually made of bronze, but caps can be made of other types of metal.
