It is difficult to define a method actor because it can mean so many different things. There is no only "method" that actors follow this type of playing, and actors identified as a "method" could study in different ways and under instructors who differ significantly in how it should be. The idea of playing method is not an American origin and comes from playwrights like Anton Chekhov and Russian actor and director Constantin Stanislavski instead. Of the first generation of methods of working instructors in the US who started connecting at the age of 30, only Stella Adler was a student of Stanislavský, while others taught different forms of methods to adapt from Stanislav's concepts.
