What is a red shirt?

Almost all scholarships of universities related to sports are limited by a student to four complete years of eligibility. However, there is an exception to this rule called redshirting. A wounded or academically fighting player may decide to sit down from a competitive game throughout the year, which still allows him to participate in four years. This player is called a red shirt, although he can wear a standard uniform and sit with a team during games or matches.
