What is a surgeon?
The surgeon is a type of fish, of which there are more than 70 different species that usually belong to the acanthuridae family . They are usually tropical fish and various species can be found around the world, often inhabiting cliffs and other similar areas. Strongly territorial and defensive, they are often not part of a large private aquarium, but the owner can be maintained with a little more effort. The surgeon has its popular name due to two small blades located near the rear fins of the fish, one on each side, used for defense against potential predators.
Sometimes it is also called Unicornfish or Tangs, the surgeon can be very different and are often clearly colored. They often have relatively flat bodies that usually have an oval shape and vertical orientation. The surgeon is herbivorous and usually feed on microscopic algae. They tend to have only a small mouth with some teeth to eat, but not for use in defense or attack. Two blades from which they get their popular name usually usedThey only go to defense and are usually somewhat inserted into a pair of slots on the fish body.
When upsetting, the surgeon with the tail begins, when two blades or spine are based on the slot where they are located and can damage the predator or attacker. As a result, the surgeon handling is relatively dangerous after capturing and some species may even have a poison that can cause serious infection and disease when it is introduced after piercing the skin of blades or spines. These spines are located towards the rear of the fish, in an area called a caudal shank, located just before the caudal fin on the back of the fish.
Thefamily of the fish to which it belongs to acanthuridae comes from two Greek words, which means a "thorn tail". This spine or blade on the tail of the surgery can often appear quite similar to the scalpel used during medical procedures such as surgery, which provides modern popular JMéno for fish. Surgeons generally do not taste well, and therefore are often not caught for food and are quite susceptible to infection in the fish reservoir, so they do not always make great accessories into such a tank. They can also be quite territorial and somewhat aggressive, so if they are added to the tank with other fish, they should be added for the last time to try to avoid problems with these tendencies.
