What is the tiger beetle?

Tiger beetle is insects approximately 0.5 inches (1.25 cm) long with wings, long legs and long antennas. It is estimated that there are more than 1,500 tiger beetles around the world, with the largest number living in a warm tropical climate. These different types include a wide range of colors. The most common colors are brownish gray and black colors designed to mix with the environment, while some species do brilliant shades of rainbow copper, green or blue.

Tiger beetles are predators, feed on small spiders, insects, worms and snails. They can run and fly fast and are able to catch prey both on the ground and in the air. Their speed causes tiger beetles to make it difficult for man to catch, but are prey of dragonflies, spiders, lizards and toads. The beetle tigers are also aggressive predators and dig holes into which they pull unsuspecting prey they absorb their strong jaws.

During the seasons they go deep into their underground burrows with low temperatures. In the United States there are about 100 types of tiger beetle. One of the common species is the six -point tiger beetle. This beetle sports a metal green head, legs, antennas and wings covered, known as Elyta, and generally has six white spots on the wings. However, there are variations, with about six -blue beetles displaying blue color, some show different stains than six and some have a solid color without stains.
