What is the Indian star turtle?

Indian star turtle is a type of turtle originating in India, although it can be found in other parts of Asia. The name probably comes from patterns in the shape of a yellow star that obscures outer shell. These turtles are popular as pets, but can only be purchased if they were born in a hatchery, because Indian star turtles that live in the wild are considered a protected species. Women can sometimes grow to a length of 15 inches (38 cm), but more often a mature woman is about 8 inches (20 cm). In most cases, men grow only about 5 inches (12.7 cm).
